Houston Dash Shut Out in Utah, Lose Van Zanten to Injury Scare
The Houston Dash fell 2-0 on the road to Utah Royals on Wednesday night. The loss may have come with an even bigger concern after star forward Kiki Van Zanten was forced off with an injury shortly after entering the match in the second half.
With this being the club’s first midweek match of the season, rotation was expected. Head coach Fabrice Gautrat made several changes to the lineup, giving Avery Patterson a rest while Cate Hardin earned her first start in midfield. Emina Ekic also made her Dash debut in place of Kat Rader, while Clarissa Larisey and Messiah Bright were given another opportunity to lead the attack in order to manage Van Zanten’s minutes.
From the opening whistle, the Dash looked disorganized and struggled to settle into the game. Utah controlled possession, pinned Houston deep, and created chance after chance against the heavily rotated side. The Dash had difficulty playing out of the back, often giving the ball away after only a few passes and spending long stretches trapped inside their own defensive third.
Utah’s breakthrough felt inevitable. After sustained pressure, Mina Tanaka delivered a perfectly timed pass to Cloé Lacasse, who calmly finished to give the Royals a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Houston responded with several changes at the break, and the adjustments immediately improved the flow of the match. However, the momentum quickly faded when Van Zanten went down less than 20 minutes after coming on as a substitute. The injury appeared to be related to her hamstring, which will be a major concern for the Dash during a demanding stretch of fixtures.
Utah sealed the result late in the match with a quick counterattack. Mina Tanaka once again played a key role, springing Courtney Brown into space before Brown finished into the bottom-right corner to secure the 2-0 victory.
The match highlighted two major concerns for Houston. First, the squad depth—particularly in the attack—still appears to be a work in progress. The Dash struggled to generate consistent danger without their usual starters on the field. Second, Van Zanten’s injury could loom large as the club enters one of the toughest portions of its schedule. Players like Kate Faasse, Messiah Bright, and Clarissa Larisey may now be asked to take on larger roles if Van Zanten misses time.
The Dash return home on Saturday, May 9, when they host NWSL expansion side Denver Summit FC at 7 p.m. CT. The match will stream on NWSL+.
