Houston Dynamo 2 continued what feels like a nationwide tour, and they keep returning to Texas with points in their pockets. This time, the team traveled to the Pacific Northwest to take on a strong Portland Timbers 2 side that entered the match riding a four-game unbeaten streak of their own.
Dynamo Dos, led by interim head coach Jeremy Hurdle, who may deserve a second look at dropping the “interim” tag, once again showed why they are among the league’s elite. Not only did Houston score three unanswered goals, but they also continued to hold the title of the best defense in MLS NEXT Pro, having allowed just five goals all season. Offensively, they remain one of the league’s most dangerous sides, sitting second in goals scored with 28 goals in 11 matches, trailing only Crown Legacy FC, who have recorded 36 in 12 games.
Houston opened the scoring in the 29th minute. Reese Miller made a dangerous run down the left flank and timed his delivery perfectly, finding Samir Mohammad charging through the middle into the six-yard box. Mohammad connected with the cross to put Dynamo 2 ahead 1-0, scoring his second goal of the season just 10 days after signing his MLS NEXT Pro contract with the club through June 2027.
The second half belonged to Austin Brummett, who recorded his second career brace in MLS NEXT Pro.
His first goal came in the 50th minute. D’Alessandro Herrera controlled a long ball and drove into the penalty area. After lifting his head, he spotted Brummett arriving in support and laid the ball off for him. Brummett struck toward goal, and with a fortunate deflection off a Portland defender, the ball wrong-footed the goalkeeper and found the back of the net.
Portland nearly responded shortly after, but the woodwork came to Houston’s rescue. A dangerous chance struck the post, and the rebound was quickly cleared by the Houston defense to preserve Pedro Cruz’s clean sheet.
As the saying goes, success in soccer takes skill, passion, and a little bit of luck, and luck certainly smiled on Brummett in this match. His second goal came after a cross from the right side by Diego Gonzalez. Following a failed clearance by Portland, Brummett settled the ball with a couple of quick touches before firing a shot that took another deflection and ended up in the back of the net, sealing the 3–0 victory for Houston.
Next up for Dynamo 2 is another road trip to the West Coast, this time to face Ventura County FC on June 6 at 6 PM. Ventura County enters the match after two consecutive defeats and will look to get back on track, while Jeremy Hurdle’s side will aim to keep their unbeaten season alive.
