It Had to Be May
After struggling to begin the 2025 season, the Dynamo came alive in May. After losing the first two matches of the month in MLS play, Houston has picked up 10 points from their last four matches. The Dynamo have three shutouts in those four games and scored multiple goals in all of them. It was always going to take some time to acclimate new players to replace the stars that left, and we are beginning to see that come to fruition. A busy summer awaits, and the Dynamo have rebounded and put themselves in a good position to battle it out as the hot days lie ahead.
Overflowing with Offense
Gabe Segal’s brace in Wednesday’s match showed just how deep this Dynamo striker position is now. Ezequiel Ponce, who was suspended for that game, is a Designated Player and obviously the unquestioned striker. But, Houston went out and signed Toyosi Olusanya to back up Ponce. It was Segal, however, who got the start midweek against his former team and took the spotlight for the day. With Ponce, Olusanya, and Segal, the Dynamo now have some firepower up front that the coaching staff will have the good kind of headaches over.
Changing of the Guard at SKC
Peter Vermes was Sporting Kansas City manager from 2009 until the club parted ways with him earlier this season. Kerry Zavagnin is now in charge, on an interim basis, signaling a huge change at the club. Vermes was SKC and SKC was Vermes. After poor results ovet the last couple of seasons, it was probably time for a change but it’s still odd to see this team without the stoic Vermes on the sideline. Zavagnin worked under Vermes so there are still some similarities in the way Sporting play but they are also quite different in some things. Tonight’s match will give the Dynamo a first-look at this very different Kansas City side, one they hope doesn’t catch them off guard.
