Dynamo sign defender Djevencio van der Kust on loan

The Houston Dynamo have announced the signing of defender Djevencio van der Kust on loan from FC Utrecht in the Netherlands. van der Kust was born in the Netherlands but it has been reportedly recently that he has decided to represent Suriname internationally.

“We are excited to welcome Djevencio to Houston and look forward to his continued development after earning competitive minutes in one of the top leagues in the world,” Dynamo general manager, Pat Onstad said. “He is a promising young player that we believe can make an impact this season. He was very clear about why he wanted to join the club and we’re excited to welcome him.”

van der Kust has made 24 appearances for Utrecht across all competitions. The 21-year-old joins on loan through the summer with an option to purchase. He will look to immediately take over the starting left back job for Houston while Brad Smith continues to rehab from his ACL injury.

van der Kust is a product of Utrecht’s youth academy and played the their U-17 and U-19 levels. He is a defensive minded fullback who can get forward and has a tendency to put in a high number of crosses. Here is his stats profile from fbref.com:
