The Houston Dynamo return to MLS action after a month-long break for the FIFA Club World Cup, welcoming D.C. United in a match that carries plenty of storylines, most notably Ben Olsen facing his former club once again.
D.C. United enters the match in 9th place in the Eastern Conference standings and is hoping the league's restart provides an opportunity for them to solidiy their playoff position. The Black-and-Red have been active during the summer transfer window, making several moves in an effort to climb the table..
Despite being one of MLS's most decorated clubs with four MLS Cup titles, D.C. United has been far removed from its championship years. One of its biggest additions this summer is Salvadoran international Nathan Ordaz, who arrived from LAFC in a deal worth up to nearly $2.9 million. Ordaz also joins D.C. United as a U22 Initiative player and is expected to add much-needed pace and attacking quality.
Houston's defense will also need to keep a close eye on Tai Baribo, D.C. United's leading scorer with eight goals this season. The Israeli forward has been a constant threat in front of goal and will be the focal point of the visitors' attack.
In midfield, Matti Peltola will be another key player to contain. The Finnish international is comfortable in possession, dictates the tempo, and serves as the engine of D.C. United's buildup. Limiting his influence could disrupt the visitors' rhythm and prevent them from establishing control of the match.
For Houston, this has the potential to be both an emotional and dangerous fixture given the narratives surrounding Olsen's reunion with his former club and D.C. United's renewed sense of optimism. However, if the Dynamo can impose their high-energy style, take advantage of the Houston heat, and dictate the tempo from the opening whistle, they should be well positioned to earn all three points.
