Lessons Learned: LAFC

Houston Dynamo lost 2-0 at home to LAFC earlier this season in a match that completely changed after a first half red card. Before that moment Ben Olsen’s side were organized and competing well. After it, Houston were forced into long stretches of defending as LAFC controlled possession and eventually scored twice from set pieces.

By the end LAFC had the clear edge in possession passes and overall pressure while Houston were pushed deep and rarely able to get out.

So, what did the Dynamo get right? And, what went wrong and must change in tonight’s match?

What Houston Got Right

Before the red card to Antonio Carlos for a foul on Son Heung-min, Houston were in the game. They stayed compact, defended well in open play, and did not give LAFC many clean looks early on. Even without much possession, they were organized and hard to break down.

When they did get chances, Houston tried to play forward and created a few moments in transition. Even after going down to 10 men the effort did not drop and they stayed together defensively, making LAFC work for everything.

What Went Wrong

The red card changed everything. From that point on, LAFC controlled the game and pinned Houston back for most of the night. The Dynamo struggled to get out of their own half, especially after halftime and when they went down to nine men after a second red card.

Set pieces were the biggest issue. Both LAFC goals came from dead ball situations where Houston did not clear their lines and were punished. After that, it became mostly defending for Houston with very little relief.

What Must Change

Houston have to be more disciplined, because the red card took away their chance in the last meeting. They also need to be sharper on set pieces since that is where the game was lost. With Denis Bouanga suspended, LAFC lose a key attacking threat, so Houston need to be more willing in possession. They cannot just sit back all game, they need longer spells on the ball and moments where they push LAFC back instead of absorbing pressure for long stretches.
