Who is Agustin Bouzat?
Born in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, the Bahiense began his professional career in 2011 with his hometown club Liniers de Bahía Blanca. Bouzat made 12 appearances in the Torneo Argentino B, then Argentina’s fourth tier (the league structure has since changed), before catching the attention of Boca Juniors, one of the giants of South American football.
Opportunities were limited at Boca, and Bouzat was sent on a season-long loan to Defensa y Justicia in 2016, where he truly began to establish himself. He made 45 appearances for El Halcón, scoring three goals, including one on his professional debut in a draw against Unión de Santa Fe.
In 2017, Bouzat returned to Boca Juniors but again found playing time hard to come by, making just three appearances for Los Xeneizes. Ahead of the 2018 season, he made a permanent move to Vélez Sarsfield, where he would be coached by Gabriel Heinze, a name familiar to MLS fans.
Fun fact:
Bouzat made his Boca debut against Vélez
He made his Vélez debut against Defensa y Justicia
In June 2022, Bouzat joined Colo-Colo on an 18-month loan. During his time in Chile, he won the Chilean Primera División (2022) and the Copa Chile (2023) before returning to Vélez.
By the time he left El Fortín, Bouzat tallied 188 appearances and 11 goals, wore the captain’s armband for his final two seasons, and lifted both the Argentine Primera División title (2024) and the Supercopa Internacional (2024).
What Does Agustin Bouzat Bring to Houston?
While not a physical attribute, one of Bouzat’s biggest assets is his winning mentality. With the Houston front office of Pat Onstad and Asher Mendelsohn constantly emphasizing a shift toward a winning culture, Bouzat arrives from a club that has consistently competed and won trophies in one of the most demanding leagues in the world.
Beyond the silverware, Bouzat brings something equally important: leadership. Wearing the armband at Vélez shows he is trusted as a voice on the field and in the locker room—someone who can organize, demand, and guide.
On the ball, Bouzat describes himself as:
“A very dynamic midfielder that likes to have the ball, trying to be the best mixture of attack while also defending. I like to play short (quick passes) and create associations on the field.”
That quote alone should excite Dynamo fans. Bouzat clearly fits Ben Olsen’s possession-oriented approach. His comfort in tight spaces, quick combinations, and ability to control tempo mirrors what Héctor Herrera brought during his best moments in Houston, someone who makes the team play the way they are best suited.
Tactically, Bouzat should slot in as a starting midfielder, likely alongside Artur, effectively taking over the role previously occupied by Brooklyn Raines, but with significantly more experience, leadership, and personality.
