The Houston Dynamo are back at Shell Energy Stadium to host the MLS Supporters Shield leaders, the Philadelphia Union. We talked to our friend Jose Nunez to get some insight on the Union ahead of the match.

Bayou City Soccer (BCS): This will be the first match up for Jack McGlynn against the Union. Are Philadelphia fans still following McGlynn and how are they with the trade now that it's been a few months now?

Jose Nunez (JN): Yes, Union fans generally keep track of their former players, and I certainly do. I try to share goals and accolades when possible so fans stay informed, and it’s usually well received. Jack’s situation is especially important because the structure of the deal includes a sell-on clause that will benefit Philadelphia once his time in Houston comes to an end.

BCS: Philadelphia is atop the Supporters Shield standings, to the surprise of a lot of people. How has the team done so well this season under a new coach?

JN: Based on what I’ve heard from people inside the organization, this team has fully bought into Carnell’s mentality, playing style, and the idea of making real progress compared to the 2024 season. The involvement of young players like Olwethu Makanya and Frankie Westfield has added energy and helped rejuvenate the entire squad.

BCS: With the Union in the Eastern Conference, they may not be as familiar to Dynamo fans as other teams. Who are some of the key players to watch on this Philadelphia team in thi match?

JN: Tai Baribo stands out, and this might be a bit of a cheat, but I would also highlight the pairing of Jovan Lukic and Danley Jean-Jacques. Tai is a goal-scoring machine. Despite dealing with injury and being stuck in Israel during a time of instability, he remains firmly in the Golden Boot race and is always a threat.

Jovan and Danley, in my opinion, are the most dynamic midfield pairing in the Eastern Conference and possibly in the entire league. They cover a tremendous amount of ground and are not afraid to take on defenders to spark the attack themselves.

BCS: Both teams played midweek. What do you expect to see for a starting lineup for the Union and do you think they rotate any?

JN: I don’t think so. Even though the Montreal win came by just one goal, Carnell did a good job managing the match. He used all five substitutes, avoided yellow card suspensions, and managed players’ minutes wisely.

BCS: Are there any injury concerns for the Union heading into this match?

JN: None at the moment. Jesús Bueno, the last player with a clear injury timeline, is officially back and should be a consideration off the bench.

We want to thank Jose for his time and wish our friends in Philadelphia the best of luck tonight.
