Three things we learned: Houston Dynamo vs Austin FC

The Houston Dynamo delivered one of their best performances of the season, beating Austin FC 2–0 at Shell Energy Stadium. Here are three key takeaways from the match:

Ondrej Lingr Is the spark

Ondrej Lingr scored again, showing why he’s becoming Houston’s most important attacker. His composed finish highlighted his skill and instincts and have given the Dynamo that attacking spark that they have desperately needed. Per FotMob, he created two chances and completed 85% of his passes. As the season rolls on, expect Lingr to drive Houston’s offense alongside Ezequiel Ponce and Amine Bassi, in what could amount to a very dynamic and dangerous attack.

Jonathan Bond stands tall

Jonathan Bond kept a clean sheet in just his second start, making two big saves to deny Austin. His reflex stop on Mytro Uzuni in the first half was crucial to keep the game tied and give Houston some momentum. In his interview with us last week, Bond noted how quickly he is gaining trust from his defenders and fitting in to the team. The goalkeeper position has been a question mark, going all the way back to the offseason, but Bond’s quick acclimation to the team and veteran presence is easing concerns after Steve Clark’s departure.

Brooklyn Raines is improving quickly

Brooklyn Raines, just 19-years-old, impressed again next to Artur in midfield. He completed 37 of 39 passes and made several key recoveries, according to FotMob. His composure and vision were on display against Austin and his growth and development this season is going to be a key factor for this Dynamo team going forward. Raines is fast becoming a regular starter and allowing Jack McGlynn to playing higher up the field in a role he is excelling in. It’s still early in the season and more players are coming back from injury in the coming weeks, but Raines is making a great case to be the locked-in starter in the number 8 role.
