From the Pitch to the Classroom: HCU Soccer’s Holistic Approach to Success

Houston Christian University’s men’s soccer program is entering a new era, one defined by intentional growth, competitive spirit, and a commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes. At the heart of this transformation are head coach Ryan Pratt and forward Ryan Okerayi — two figures who share a vision for where the program is headed.
For Coach Pratt, who has been with the program for more than a decade, building HCU soccer has been about more than just results on the field. “We’re establishing an identity,” he said. “We want to be known as a hard-working, disciplined, and united team that plays for each other.”
That identity begins with culture — a word that comes up often in conversation with both Pratt and Okerayi. It’s about creating an environment where players push each other to be better every day, where accountability is valued as much as talent. Pratt emphasizes that the goal isn’t only to recruit great athletes, but also to find people who buy into the program’s vision.
Okerayi, one of the team’s leading players, says that culture has made a tangible difference in the locker room. “We have a close-knit group. Everyone is hungry to win and willing to put in the work,” he said. “The coaching staff has set high standards, and we all want to meet them.”
On the competitive side, the Huskies face the challenge of going up against some of the toughest programs in their conference. Pratt acknowledges the uphill battle, but sees it as an opportunity rather than a setback. “Every game is a chance to measure ourselves and see how far we’ve come,” he said. “We’re building toward becoming a team that can consistently compete for championships.”
Part of that growth comes from giving players the freedom to express themselves on the field. Okerayi thrives in that environment. “Coach wants us to be smart with the ball but also creative,” he said. “I like the balance — it allows us to play our game while still sticking to the game plan.”
Pratt’s approach also focuses heavily on player development, ensuring his athletes leave HCU prepared for life beyond college soccer. That means investing in their academic success, leadership skills, and personal growth. “We’re trying to build men of character who will make a difference in their communities,” Pratt said. “Winning is important, but the bigger picture is shaping who these players become.”

Looking ahead, both coach and player are optimistic. The program is gaining momentum in recruiting, facilities, and community support. For Okerayi, the excitement is in being part of something that’s still growing. “I feel like we’re making history here,” he said. “Years from now, people will look back at this group and see how we helped build the foundation.”
Pratt agrees — and he’s clear that the journey is just beginning. “We’re not satisfied yet,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do, but the belief in this program is stronger than ever.”
With that belief, the Huskies continue to train, compete, and push toward their vision — not just to win games, but to build a legacy at Houston Christian University.
