Championship Ambitions
Germany comes into this match on a nine game winning streak that dates back to World Cup qualifiers in September of last year. The Germans come into this tournament looking to avenge their last two appearances in the World Cup where they were eliminated in the group stage. Manuel Neuer has come out of retirement to serve as the starting goalkeeper in this tournament. This German team is full of stars with the likes of Kai Havertz, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, and Florian Wirtz. They will be looking to get this 2026 World Cup off to a winning start.
Making History
Curacao makes their World Cup debut in today’s match, becoming the smallest country by land area and population to ever appear in FIFA’s showpiece. The island nation will be thrown right into the fire as they take on mighty Germany. Curacao has lost all three of its friendlies leading up to this tournament, losing by a combined 9-2 in its last two matches against fellow World Cup teams Australia and Scotland. It will be a big upset if Curacao can get anything from this tournament, goals or points, but their journey here is a remarkable one.
Houston Takes the Stage
Houston has hosted its share of big events from NCAA Final Fours to NFL Super Bowls, and even big soccer matches like last summer’s Gold Cup Final. But, nothing compares to hosting the biggest sporting event in the world. Today’s match is the first of seven in Houston in the next four weeks, a truly incredible time for Houston. The city is already welcoming tens of thousands of visitors from around the world to the city. If you were able to get tickets to any of the matches, congratulations and have a blast. If you didn’t there are numerous things to do around town, including Fan Fest in EaDo. Enjoy this time as the world comes to Houston, and Houston comes to the world.
