Volt League Week 5 Recap

Match week 5 in Volt League saw more great matches as teams continued to jockey for position in the league table early in the season. Let’s look back at how it all went down.

MAFC 5-0 Houston Rovers

MAFC did it again, another win and a shift to the league table that now sees them on top. The Lions put 5 on the board this time around and kept the clean sheet to jump over FC Nightwatch, who had kept the top spot until this week. Houston Rovers held for most of the first half until the 42nd minute when Francisco Garcia put the first goal on the board to open up the count for MAFC. The second goal came from a deep run on the right side that ended on a low cross on top of the six. Garcia finished it like a pro with a back of the leg flick to get his second of the day. The 70th minute brought the third of the day for MAFC. A cross came into the box and once again Garcia was there to beat the defense of Rovers to the ball and connected with his head to put the ball in the back of the net. The fourth goal came from a beautiful run from J. Velazquez, who after leaving a Rovers player behind, went one on one with the goalkeeper. With a quick touch he left the keeper in the dust and got his goal in the 87th minute. When everything seemed like it was said and done in this game, in the 88th minute, Luis Cunemo got his one on one opportunity with the keeper and picked a spot to get the fifth one of the day for MAFC and bring the three points home.

Houston Rovers will take on Houstonians FC in match week 6 to attempt to break their losing streak and start adding points. On the other hand, the Lions of MAFC will be taking on Greenflag FC.

Ghosttown Saints FC 6-2 Frankfurt Athletic

The stars aligned in the attack for the Saints and the goals came from the attacking stars. Ayoka opened the count in the 15th minute and then followed in the 30th to give Ghosttown an earlu lead. Ayoke completed his hat trick in the 91st minute to finish off a man of the match performance. Castelan, the winger, also was important for the Saints as he bagged a brace. A great goal by S. Ekp rounded out the scoring for Ghosttown. For Frankfurt, their two goals came from the feet Fatoki and Funez from the penalty spot.

Frankfurt will look to get their second win of the season as they take on AC Juniors in week 6. Ghosttown Saints will look to keep their form in the top spots and have to face FC Seinfeld, who sits at the bottom of the table, in week 6.

FC Nightwatch 1-5 Houstonians FC

This was just the win Houstonians needed to break a negative streak early this season, and it came against none other than the undefeated FC Nightwatch. Nelson Jr opened up the count for Houstonians early on in the 13th minute. Only ten minutes later, the Blue Owls tied it up with a finish in the box by M. Leonard. Houstonians responded quickly with another great finish by the number 10, a beautiful chip over the goalkeeper. The first half was almost entirely one sided, with Houstonians having ten shots and six on target against the 2 by Nightwatch. Bad luck struck the Owls in the beginning of the second half. A defender sent a pass back to the goalkeeper and he couldn’t get a grip on it as the ball ended up in the back of the net. After a red card for NIghtwatch, it was all Houstonians. Kevin Rodriguez got the fourth goal after a one on one with the keeper. Another red card was shown to a Nightwatch player, and it would just give even more space to the Houstonians side. Pedro Uribe would add a gorgeous goal, leaving men on the floor inside the box. It was a goal of the year contender, in my opinion. Houstonians broke the undefeated streak of FC Nightwatch and picked up three points for the first time this season. They will hope to use this win as a springboard to continue to rise up the table.

Houstonians will be taking on Houston Rovers this weeked and FC Nightwatch look to right the ship and will take on International SC.

International 5-2 FC Seinfeld

Castellanos bagged his first of two goals in the third minute from a corner kick and put Inter on top real quick in the game. Memba tied it up in the 17th minute from the spot as the game sprung to life. Inter would then put two on the board, one from Ambriz Jr. from a penalty kick and another one from D. Castellanos for his brace. Starting the second half, the Goats got one back to make the score 3-2 and pull the game a little bit closer. Inter, though. would have other plans to close out the night. In the 59th, Rangel got the fourth goal for Inter to expand the gap between both squads. A few minutes later, in the 67th, Ambriz sealed the deal for Inter.

Inter will be taking on FC Nightwatch this weekend, looking to continue their positive run. FC Seinfeld takes on Ghosttown Saints for one of the OG classics in VOLT League.

AC Juniors 2-3 Greenflag FC

The last match of the night was by far the most entertaining because it was fought until the last second of the match. Greenflag started off very strong with two true golazos from Ishe Makoni. The goal that would end up making the difference at the end of the night was a great goal by Omar Eslayed early in the second half, in the 48th minute. The next 42 minutes saw a desperate AC Juniors looking for a miracle comeback, and they came close to a miraculous draw. Daniel Castro brought down a ball inside of the six to put away the first goal for AC Juniors, and then Sevilla put in the second from a corner kick in the 67th minute, giving hope of stealing a point. The current champs attacked the rest of the time but the defense of Greenflag stood their ground and fought until the final whistle to add three important points. They now sit tied in first place with MAFC with 12 points.

AC Juniors, who dropped to fifth place, will face Frankfurt Athletic this week. A game that promises a lot of sparks and good soccer will be the Greenflag FC  taking on MAFC. This is a great opportunity for both of these clubs to bridge a gap between first and second place early in the competition.
