2025 in review

At 36 years old to start the season, Schmidt was a veteran that didn’t get much playing time. She started three games early in the season but then didn’t see the field much again. That changed after the summer break as Schmidt, out of nowhere, became a lethal super sub. You can’t really put a weight on what a player like Schmidt brings to a roster, on and off the field, but her two late goals in consecutive matches were a bit of a fairy tale and a kick start to Houston’s unbeaten run.

Moment of the season

After scoring a dramatic stoppage time equalizer on August 2, Super Sub Sophie was at it again on August 8 at Shell Energy Stadium. Yazmeen Ryan drove to the end line and squared a ball in front of goal. Schmidt arrived in the six yard box to tap in the match-winning goal to give Houston a 2-1 victory over North Carolina Courage.

Looking forward

Schmidt’s 2025 season ended in September when she had to undergo knee surgery. The Dash legend is still under contract for 2026 with a mutual option for 2027. The extent of her injury and how long she will be out going into next season still remains to be seen. Schmidt will turn 38 in the summer but she’s proven she still has a role to play and can do a job when called upon.
