2025 in review

When the Dash were in need of a franchise-caliber star, they made a bold move to acquire Yazmeen Ryan from Gotham FC last December. Having been part of championship-winning teams in Portland and New York, she was expected to provide the attacking spark the Dash had been missing.

However, the first half of the season was underwhelming, as she was moved across multiple positions on the front line and midfield in an effort to jumpstart the offense—rather than being allowed to thrive in her natural role. After the summer break, head coach Fabrice Gautrat positioned her where she could truly succeed, and she quickly became a key attacking threat. Even when she missed time due to injury, her absence was noticeable, underscoring her growing influence within the team. Ryan finished the season with a team-high four goals and tied for the team lead in assists with three.

Moment of the season

I’m going to cheat a little for her moment of the season. Rather than a single highlight, it came during a stretch in late August into September against Seattle, Louisville, and San Diego. During that run, she was simply unstoppable — scoring twice and adding an assist to help the Dash earn five crucial points and extend their unbeaten streak. After that performance, there was no question she had secured her place as a star on this team.

Looking forward

Yazmeen signed a three-year contract extension in January that keeps her with the Dash through the 2027 season. If she can replicate her form from the second half of the campaign, there’s little doubt she can help push this team into the playoffs — and potentially beyond. Moving forward, she’s expected to be the centerpiece of the Dash attack.
