HOUSTON DASH HEAD COACH FABRICE GAUTRAT

On the match:

"This is a tough place (Providence Park) to play. Conceding early on didn't help us, but overall, I thought we tried to play and stick to our identity. There were a lot of positives as well to takeaway, especially during this second half of the season.”

On the team’s performance:

"When you're up a goal, you start dropping off a little bit. We had a little more space and time in the second half. I thought the players that came in really tried to brighten things up and be more positive for us. We had about 49 attacking third entries and had 0.13 expected goals. That is an area we have to keep improving on. We got to work a lot in the offseason and just keep working through that."

On improving the attack in the offseason:

"It's also not without our defensive mentality and structure. As that gets more and more consistent, it will also help our in possession as well but that's (goals being scored) a big piece of what we need to work on."

On goalkeeper Jane Campbell surpassing 600 career saves:

"What she (Jane Campbell) brings to us is invaluable. She has grown so much as a leader and as a player. She's really come to her own. She's fighting to get back into the national team, but she's a big piece of what we're doing and I'm really proud of her."

HOUSTON DASH GOALKEEPER JANE CAMPBELL

On the match:

“It was a tough match against Portland. We knew it was going to be a hard game. It’s always a great environment here with their fans, and we know they’re a tough team to beat, especially as they were playing for a home playoff spot. I knew we would be up for the challenge, and unfortunately it just didn’t go our way, but I’m super proud of the group. We played really well, even though the score doesn’t reflect that. I’m proud of everyone for this year. I’m looking forward to building on the growth we’ve made for next year.”

On reaching 600 saves and 15,000 minutes with the Houston Dash:

“I’m really proud and honored to do it with one club. I know staying with one club for this long is pretty rare in this league. I’ve always said I’m a loyal dog, and I’m proud to represent the city of Houston. They drafted me in 2017 and took a chance. I wasn’t really supposed to play much in the beginning, but I got my shot, and I’ve never looked back. I’m so thankful for the organization and everyone who’s been with me over the years, and I’m excited to see where the club goes as we continue to grow. This year had some tough times, but it made it all worth it in the end. Over the next couple of years, I think we’re going to build something really great, and I hope the fans and everyone supporting us can see the growth we made this year. Reaching 15,000 minutes is a huge honor, and I’m thankful for everyone who’s been along for the ride, teammates, coaches, and everyone in between. I couldn’t have done it without them.”

On the foundation of the defense going into next season:

“The back line is all about chemistry and getting to know one another. When Malia (Berkely) joined, she fit in smoothly and picked up right where she left off at North Carolina, so adding her was great. Lisa (Boattin) was also a great addition with her silky left foot. We have so many talented players back there, like (Allysha) Chapman, Michelle (Alozie), Avery (Patterson), and Paige (Nielsen), who is here for the long haul. Being able to play together over the past few months and really understand each other’s tendencies outside of games has been helpful, and the more time we spend together, the better we become. I am honored to play behind them. They are all amazing players who make me better, and I am excited for next year.”

On her thoughts this season:

“We started the year with a different group, different faces, styles of play, formations, you name it. Players come and go, and tactics change. There were so many things in life thrown at us, multiple players were dealing with a lot of things, and at the end of the day, whether faces come and go, it’s just us rallying around each other. Whoever is in the uniform on the given day and whoever wants to step up and represent this crest is someone we’re going to have their back. So, 10th place isn’t necessarily a reflection of the growth we made. Obviously, it’s where the standings are, and that’s unfortunate, but at the same time, we can’t rush the process. We all wanted a top-four finish with a new coach and a new president, but not that it wasn’t achievable, we definitely hit some speed bumps along the way, and it was for the better. I’m glad we hit them when we did, because we were able to grow from them and open up doors of communication better and understand each other better. With better communication from all of us, we were able to hit the ground running, especially after the summer break. We were able to build momentum, and we wouldn’t have had that if we hadn’t faced adversity at the beginning of the season. I’m really proud of everyone. The players who aren’t going to be back here next year, I love them dearly, and it’s going to be heartbreaking to see them go. But the ones who are returning, I’m super thankful they’re back. The sky is the limit for this organization, from the players to the staff to the front office. We can create something great in Houston and make it a team worth fighting for, and people are going to be scared of it. I’m really proud of the group. I love everyone.”

HOUSTON DASH DEFENDER ANNA HEILFERTY

On the match:

“It was a great setting (Providence Park) for our team to step into. We laid it all out there in our last game of the season, played together as a unit, and finished on a good note knowing that we did everything possible today."

On the team’s second half performance:

“Honestly, just changing the formation a little bit, we went into a 3-5-2, shifting to a more direct attack to put the ball in their half and go from there. We built some good partnerships on the field and were able to connect well as a team.”

On what she has seen from the team since joining:

“I feel really lucky to be a part of this team and to have joined when I did. Right off the bat, what I recognized was the mentality and how hard this group works for each other. I feel honored to be part of a team that is humble, does the hard things every day and shows up for every game.”
