HOUSTON DASH HEAD COACH FABRICE GAUTRAT

On the game:

“Overall, the game plan was no secret. Obviously, being defensively sound, which we were a bit unfortunate to give up a penalty kick in the manner that we did, a bit frustrating. I thin, the game could have continued in the way that it was going. Overall, I asked the team to make sure that we were who we were. In terms of how we defended, we had certain KPIs (key performance indicators) and benchmarks to prove that and we hit those. We didn't create as many key chances as we would like, but we probably limited Kansas City to the least amount of chances that they've had all season. So, I think those are some positives right there."

On defensive plays from the match:

“That was a big thing for us, we talked about that before the game and the biggest conversation was our performance. I thought those players were fantastic. You could say the same for Paige (Nielsen), Maggie (Graham), Christen (Westfall), and (Ryan) Gareis. I think overall, the whole backline did a really good job and the whole team defended as a unit, so that was good to see."

On looking ahead to back-to-back home matches:

"Obviously, the next couple games are important, but I think we need to build off this performance in terms of the grit. If you look at some of our previous games, we're giving up goals way too easily. So, that was a real positive, for us. That needs to stay the same and we need to start imposing our will a little more in how we play with the ball.”

HOUSTON DASH DEFENDER CHRISTEN WESTPHAL

On the game:

"From last game to this one, there was huge progress. We reflected on it after our last game and we really wanted to come into this game and put in a defensive shift—working for each other, bringing energy and putting in the hard work. I think we accomplished that. The result didn't go the way we wanted. Obviously, we want to win games, but I feel like we're still a new team and we're focused on being able to progress each week and coming out of this game, we definitely did that, especially on the defensive side."

On looking ahead to back-to-back home matches:

“We want to build off this performance. We were working for each other, the energy we had, the confidence we had in each other. Defensively, how we played this game, we can carry that into the next game by being more offensive, being brave, continuing to shape the identity that we want to have, that we're building and what we're curating here. These next two games are going to be such a good opportunity for us to do that, to push the standard forward and continue to build the habits we know we need in order to be successful in this league.”
