The Houston Dash fell 1-0 to the North Carolina Courage in a tight contest following the international break, despite entering the match as favorites.

After the news that Makenzy Robbe would miss the rest of the season, head coach Fabrice Gautrat made a few adjustments to the lineup. Kate Faasse returned from injury to take a spot on the front line, while Lisa Boattin replaced Malia Berkely in the backline, shifting Leah Klenke into a central defensive role.

Robbe’s absence was evident early on. The Dash struggled to create progressive attacking sequences in the first half, lacking a true focal point up top. While Faasse and Van Zanten are both talented, their tendency to drop deeper and operate in similar spaces limited Houston’s presence in the striker position.

After failing to capitalize on their chances, the Dash were punished. Manaka Matsukubo played a well-weighted through ball to Ashley Sanchez, who controlled it calmly before finishing past Jane Campbell to give the Courage a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Houston showed more urgency in the second half but still couldn’t generate clear-cut opportunities. The match tilted further in their favor in the 76th minute when Ally Schlegel was shown a red card for a foul on Danny Colaprico. Despite the numerical advantage, the Dash were unable to find an equalizer in the closing stages.

Overall, the match played out much like you might expect after a lengthy international break. Houston showed flashes of attacking promise but ultimately lacked the finishing touch. The absence of a central striker presence was particularly noticeable, as the Dash struggled to convert crosses or hold up play in dangerous areas.

The Dash will look to bounce back next Friday when they host Seattle Reign FC at 7:00 PM CT, streaming on Victory+.
