Three things we learned: Houston Dash vs Angel City FC

The Houston Dash fell 3-1 to Angel City FC Saturday at Shell Energy Stadium. After each game this season, we’ll bring you three key takeaways from the match. Here is our next edition, following the Dash's loss at home.

Stretches of Brilliance, Still Just Stretches

Fabrice Gautrat’s team looks like a completely different side compared to previous years. However, the Dash head coach has emphasized the need for their moments of brilliance to become more consistent. Barbara Olivieri and Yazmeen Ryan combined for a beautiful goal, but chances like that have been few and far between. Consistency is key — and we haven’t seen them fully hit their stride just yet.

Speed is the Dash Killer

Transition play has been a consistent challenge for this Dash team, and this game was no exception. Two of the three goals they conceded came from transitional moments and Angel City’s pressure in midfield. Once Avery Patterson returns, Houston should regain some much-needed pace in their lineup — but there’s still plenty of room for growth for this new-look Dash.

Diana Ordoñez is Regaining her Form

Ordoñez returned to the starting lineup and had a good chance that was denied by Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderso. Seeing another option at the striker position was a refreshing change. Ordoñez brought a strong presence in the box, and as she continues to cement her place in the lineup, she looks poised to bring goals to a number 9 role that has felt like a void in her absence.
