Houston Dynamo 2 continued their scorching run of form to start the season with a 2-1 victory over Sporting KC II. Austin Brummett delivered a brace in the first half, and Houston’s defense was good enough to best one of their northern rivals.

Dos lined up without Daniel Barrett in the starting lineup, but they still had plenty of star power on the field. Mattheo Dimareli, Matthew Arana, Gilberto Rivera, and Brummett all started in what was a very attack-heavy formation.

Houston’s attacking momentum was varied, with Sporting KC II sometimes having good spells of attacking football. Dos were clearly the superior side, especially over two halves, and Sporting KC’s attack was anemic when it came to finishing off the opportunities they had.

Brummett opened the scoring in the sixth minute after a coordinated pressing move from both him and Arana, who was credited with the assist. Brummett’s shot was too strong for the goalkeeper to handle.

In the 20th minute, Brummett added to his goal tally yet again. He slipped between two of theopposition center backs, and Myles Gardner delivered a beautiful ball into the box. Brummett was able to get low and head the cross into the back of the net.

The game slowed down a bit after that early goal barrage. Sporting KC II made things interesting past the 90th minute after a goal from Johann Ortiz cut Kansas City’s deficit to one.

Dos were able to ride the late storm out and continue their incredible start to the MLS NEXT Pro season. They’ll try and continue their good fortunes on May 3 against Colorado Rapids 2, who sit at the very bottom of the MLS NEXT Pro standings with only three points to their name.
