The unbeaten run continued for Houston Dynamo 2 as they push through a demanding 10-game road stretch. This time, the team, led by interim head coach Jeremy Hurdle, traveled to the Rocky Mountains to face Colorado Rapids 2, a side looking to turn their season around with a statement result against one of the top teams in the MLS NEXT Pro Western Conference.
Houston came out flying. Just 60 seconds into the match, Samir Mohammad intercepted a pass intended for Colorado goalkeeper Zack Campagnolo, leaving himself one-on-one. Mohammad chipped the ball beautifully, but the crossbar denied him an early goal.
The pressure didn’t stop there. Mattheo Dimarelli, Gilberto Rivera (twice), Jahmani Bell, and Noah Betancourt all tested Campagnolo within the first 20 minutes, but the goalkeeper stood strong to keep the match scoreless.
It would take a special moment to break the deadlock, and it came from a familiar name. Academy product Matthew Arana, just 15 years old, pressed high to win the ball and drove into the box. With composure beyond his years, he cut onto his left foot, left a defender on the ground, and delicately chipped the keeper to open the scoring. It marked Arana’s second goal of the season.
Colorado attempted to respond with a set-piece header that went wide. Their momentum took a major hit in the 44th minute when Arana drew a foul that resulted in a red card for defender Charlie Harper.
Houston took full advantage before halftime. A perfectly weighted through ball from Vinicius Silva split the defense, finding Reese Miller, who calmly set himself up and fired a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 2–0. Dynamo Dos went into the break in full control, registering 18 shots (8 on target) while limiting Colorado to just two attempts.
The second half picked up right where things left off for Houston. In the 51st minute, Dynamo 2 were awarded a penalty. Gilberto Rivera stepped up and converted with a confident panenka, extending the lead to 3–0.
Colorado managed to pull one back just two minutes later through Alex Harris, but it proved to be little more than a consolation. The home side struggled to create meaningful chances against a disciplined Houston side.
With the 3-1 win, Dynamo Dos extended their unbeaten streak to seven wins and one draw (plus a shootout victory), continuing their strong push near the top of the standings.
Next up is perhaps their toughest test yet. Houston will travel to face another unbeaten side, St. Louis CITY2, with both teams level on 23 points. Kickoff is set for May 9 at 4 PM, and fans can catch all the action on MLSnextpro.com.
