2025 in review
With the departures of captain Héctor Herrera and veteran goalkeeper Steve Clark, Erik Sviatchenko entered the season expected to be the emotional and defensive leader of the Houston Dynamo. However, his season never truly got going. A visa delay caused him to miss a significant portion of preseason, and just as he reintegrated with the squad, a hamstring injury sidelined him — an issue that lingered throughout the year.
Without Sviatchenko and with Micael gone, the Dynamo back line became a revolving door of center-back pairings. When he did play, his leadership, communication, and calm presence on the field noticeably lifted the team. But, his absence highlighted just how much the squad lacked experience and organization without him. The contrast between when he was on the field and when he wasn’t became one of the defining storylines of the season.
Moment of the season
Sviatchenko’s standout moment came on the road against St. Louis. After returning from injury, he delivered a composed and commanding 75 minutes, helping the Dynamo take a 3–0 lead. But, as soon as he was subbed off, the team lost momentum and conceded twice. It was a clear reminder of his value — not just in defending, but in leadership, positioning, and composure.
Looking forward
Despite the difficult season, Sviatchenko’s future remains in Houston. His contract runs through the end of 2026, with a club option for 2027. Both the club and player will be hoping for a fully healthy season in 2026, as his quality and leadership are undeniable when he’s on the field. If he can stay fit, he will be central to stabilizing the Dynamo defense and guiding a young, evolving back line.
