2025 in review
Jimmy Maurer began the 2025 season as the backup goalkeeper behind Andrew Tarbell, expected to serve as a steady veteran presence and occasional spot starter. When Tarbell suffered a season-ending ACL injury just four games into the season, Maurer was given his opportunity to step into the starting role. Unfortunately, his chance was short-lived — in his very first start, he suffered an injury of his own, sidelining him before he could make a real impact or build any rhythm. His absence forced the Dynamo to turn to third-choice goalkeeper Blake Gillingham and the club moved quickly to bring in Jonathan Bond, who ended up becoming the undisputed starter. Maurer returned to the lineup briefly, playing the full 90 minutes in Houston’s 3-1 loss to Austin in the Round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup in May.
Moment of the season
Maurer’s season didn’t offer a defining on-field highlight like other players, but his moment came in simply being called upon after Tarbell’s injury — a reminder of his professionalism and readiness to step in when needed. Though his time was cut short by injury, his role in holding the position during a turbulent transitional period was still important in the larger context of the season.
Looking forward
Looking ahead to 2026, Maurer remains under contract and is expected to return healthy. With Bond locked in as the starting goalkeeper, Maurer will likely serve as the second-choice keeper heading into next season. If fully fit, his experience and calm presence make him a reliable backup option, and he’ll be expected to mentor younger goalkeepers and stay ready should his number be called again.
