Rapid Revenge
The 6-2 loss was a kick in the teeth for the Dynamo. They conceded twice early and never could get back into the game. Ben Olsen said on Friday that game wasn’t as bad as the scoreline indicated and it could have been 3-2 to Houston in the first half. He said the Dynamo’s effort was there but Colorado made more plays so you have to take the match with a grain of salt. Olsen did say that they can’t be naive about the loss and what they found out about themselves in the match. The stats were pretty even in that match, yes, but it was still a 6-2 loss. Now the Dynamo have a chance to avenge that loss just a month later.
Running on Fumes
The Dynamo played seven matches in April and now they begin another busy month as tonight marks the first match of six in May. Houston had to play 120 minutes on Wednesday in their Lamar Hunt US Open Cup win over Louisviile. Fortunately for the Dynamo, the Rapids are in the same boat, having to play 120 minutes and penalty kicks in their USOC win Wednesday. Olsen said earlier in the week on Friday that his team is running on fumes but reiterated on Friday that sometimes you have to play tired. The Dynamo and Rapids will be doing just that tonight.
Rocky Rapids
Since that win over the Dynamo on April 11, the Rapids won an Open Cup match on April 14 and then have gone winless in their last four, including three league matches. They beat Colorado Springs on penalty kicks after a 2-2 draw midweek to advance in the USOC but have a draw and two losses in their last three league matches. The Rapids held LAFC to a 0-0 draw but conceded three goals each in losses to Inter Miami and Vancouver. But, Colorado has won six of the fifteen meetings between these two teams at Shell Energy Stadium, more wins than the Dynamo have over them in their home stadium. The Dynamo, however, have two wins and two draws in the last four matches in downtown Houston.
