Best of the Best
Brazil comes to Houston as the most succesful team in World Cup history. They have won the most, with five (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), and are the only country to appear at every World Cup. All that success and history comes with big expectations and this Brazil team has not lifted the trophy in 24 years. Brazil haven’t been eliminated in the first knockout round since 1990, however, so they look poised for another run. But, can that lead to a championship? The legend Neymar returned against Scotland after 981 days and looks to give this team a boost, whatever his role may be.
Samurai Blue
Japan are in their 8th consecutive World Cup and advaned to the Round of 16 in their last two appearances. They lost to Croatia in penalties in 2022 and are now back looking to win a knockout round match for the first time in their history. After an impressive 2-2 draw against the Netherlands to open this tournament, Japan beat Tunisia and then drew with Sweden. This will be Japan’s seventh all-time meeting against Brazil with the South American side winning six times. However, Japan won the last time these teams met, coming back from a 2-0 half time deficit to win 3-2 in October.
Strikers Delight
Both of these teams scored seven goals in their three group stage games, showing their offensive firepower. Brazil boasts numerous attacking threats, including Manchester United’s Matheus Cunha and Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Junior. Japan has some weapons of their own up front with Feyenoord’s Ayase Ueda and Celtic’s Daizen Maeda leading the line. Brazil conceded just once in the group stage, 20 minutes into their opening match. With two teams that are strong offensively, defense will make the difference here and ultimately decide who moves on to the Round of 32.
