2025 in review
Paige Nielsen entered the 2025 season tasked with anchoring Houston’s defensive line alongside veterans Natalie Jacobs and Katie Lind. With her experience, leadership, and composure, Nielsen was expected to be a steadying force under newly appointed manager Fabrice Gautrat. Like much of the team, she endured early struggles as the Dash adjusted to a new tactical system and frequent lineup changes.
Despite the growing pains, Nielsen quickly emerged as the most reliable piece in Houston’s back line. She was the rock in defense, featuring in all 26 regular-season matches — the only Dash defender to do so. Her physicality, intelligent positioning, and leadership helped the team maintain structure even during difficult stretches. Nielsen’s consistency became the foundation upon which the team could build, and her presence was crucial in stabilizing the defense as the season went on.
Moment of the season
Nielsen’s standout moment came in just the second match of the season on the road against the Chicago Stars. The veteran defender scored a rare goal — one that would help secure Houston’s first victory under Fabrice Gautrat. It was a moment that embodied her leadership and determination, setting the tone for the Dash’s continued improvement throughout the campaign.
Looking forward
The future remains bright for Paige Nielsen in Houston. The veteran signed a new four-year contract extension in January, keeping her with the Dash through the 2028 NWSL season. With Natalie Jacobs departing and Katie Lind’s future uncertain, Nielsen’s leadership and experience will be even more vital heading into 2026. She has proven to be the team’s defensive anchor, and her influence both on and off the field will play a major role in shaping the next phase of the Houston Dash’s evolution.
