A very rainy Friday night was the scene for the Houston Dash as they took on the Seattle Reign at Shell Energy Stadium. The match started with heavy downpours and the rain came down throughout the 90 minutes.
Fabrige Gautrat made one change to the starting lineup from last weekend’s 1-0 loss against the North Carolina Courage. Malia Berkely came in at center back, alongside Leah Klenke, which relegated Paige Nielsen to the bench.
You might expect an ugly game in the monsoon-like conditions but both teams were on the attack throughout the first half. Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell was called into action early and made a couple of good saves to keep Seattle off the board. The Dash had chances as well on the other end but Reign goalkeeper Claudia Dickey was up for the challenge.
The teams went into halftime still scoreless, as the rain began to slacken a little. But just as the game got back underway for the second 45 minutes, the skies opened up once again.
Seattle’s best chance in the second half came in the 60th minute off a corner kick. Sofia Huerta put the ball into the box and center back Emily Mason hit it first time on the volley. Campbell looked beat but the ball came off the crossbar and away.
The Dash struck the post as well with their best chance. A brilliant buildup on the right side got Avery Patterson into the box. She tried to beat Dickey at the near post but her shot took a slight deflection and hit the post.
Neither teams looked content with a draw as Houston and Seattle went back and forth on the attack late in the match. A goal wasn’t to be though, and the match ended 0-0. It was the first clean sheet for the clean sheet for the Dash since their second match of the season, a 3-0 win over Boston Legacy on March 21.
The Dash will now head to Utah for a midweek match against the Royals on Wednesday, May 6. That match will kick off at 9 PM, on CBS Sports Network.
