2025 in review
Obafemi “Femi” Awodesu entered the season expected to be a depth option for the Houston Dynamo back line. But, with Micael’s departure right before the season began and repeated injuries to Erik Sviatchenko, the rookie was thrust into the starting lineup far sooner than anticipated. His physical attributes, size, and athleticism stood out, showing glimpses of potential and why the club believed in his upside.
However, as the season wore on, it became clear that he wasn’t quite ready for the pace and demands of MLS. Awodesu struggled with decision-making under pressure, made repeated mistakes in key moments, and those errors often cost the team. Despite the struggles, Ben Olsen had few alternatives and was forced to keep him in the lineup, making his growing pains more visible. It felt less like a lack of effort and more like a talented young player thrown into the fire before he was ready.
Moment of the season
Awodesu’s best performance came in late April against Austin FC. In a high-pressure rivalry match, he delivered one of his most composed and confident displays of the season, helping the Dynamo secure a 2–0 win. It was a glimpse of the player he could become — strong in duels, disciplined in positioning, and fully locked in defensively.
Looking forward
Earlier this week, the Dynamo declined Awodesu’s club option. While his rookie year was difficult and at times unforgiving, the experience could serve as a valuable lesson if he continues his career elsewhere. He leaves as a player who showed promise but ultimately wasn’t ready to make the leap at this level — at least not yet.
