HOUSTON DYNAMO HEAD COACH BEN OLSEN
On the match:
“This one hurts because we had the game under control and we were in a good place. We did not deal with a corner kick, and we have been one of the best teams in the league in that department this season, but we just were not good enough in that moment. San Diego are a good team and a handful. Their start was good, and the way they play, it takes a bit of time to figure them out. We did some problem solving and had a great response after going down 2-0. We had some great transition moments and a great goal over the top with Mati Bogusz, which continued from then on. It was good stuff. I liked our ability to play and break them through lines, but we were also dangerous with more direct balls in behind. Lawrence Ennali and Bogusz had good games. At 3-2, we have to be killers and score more goals. There are too many chances there for us not to stick the knife in, which ended up haunting us by not getting all three points tonight.”
On having Designated Players like Mati Bogusz and Guilherme:
“Mati Bogusz scored a great goal with an individual effort. We talked about transition and how we were going to expose them, and the first goal was an exact replica of what we were showing the players. Guilherme knows how to put the ball in the net. Lawrence Ennali knows how to run and get behind. The overall play for the first goal was a well thought out and executed team goal. On Mati’s, we have been asking for more verticality, and he is a guy whose best quality is running off the ball, and when he does that, and we find him, he will have more nights like tonight.”
On the upcoming Texas Derby against FC Dallas”
“Behind the scenes, we have enough support staff here that we are ready for Dallas. We will give the players the right information over the next few days. But it is hard. We get back tomorrow, and then we have essentially one day to get the group on the same page. We will be prepared, and Dallas are in the same boat with a lot of games as well. We will see what we can put together, but we understand it is a big match. We need to recharge the batteries over the next two days, while getting back on the field Friday and really digging into them to get ready for a Texas Derby match.”
