Life From the 9s

Lyle Foster and Duncan McGuire both scored their first goals for the club in Saturday’s draw against Minnesota. The goals were the first scored by a striker in league play for Houston this season. Foster pounced on a mistake from Minnesota and McGuire and Nick Markanich combined on a nice play from a Mateusz Bogusz cross into the box to equalize late. Ben Olsen talked about the benefit of playing with a true nine now and not having to use a “false” role. Foster looks the part, with his English Premier League pedigree but with a big Texas Derby looming this weekend, we could see McGuire get a chance in this match. Whoever is up front, the Dynamo will have some confidence now knowing they can get goals from that position.

A Crack in the Dam

The Dynamo defense has been the consistent positive for the team this season, grinding out clean sheets and results over the summer months. But, is that unit showing some signs of faitgue? Houston has allowed a goal in five consecutive games, winning just one of those. They have conceded two goals in each of their last three games. This is definitely an area to clean up but ultimately, not one to worry to much about, in my opinion. The defense will play well, it’s just a matter of being consistent. That starts tonight against a San Diego attack that has scored 48 goals in 28 league games this season.

In Dreyer They Trust

San Diego FC are currently on the outside of the playoff picture, sitting in 12th place in the Western Conference. They are winless in their last six, including that 4-1 drubbing by Red Bull New York four days ago. Even with San Diego struggling, they know they can lean on their star Anders Dreyer to pull them up. The Danish attacker, who was the MLS Newcomer of the Year and Best XI selection last year, is having another big season with 11 goals and 12 assists in 2026. Olsen called him one of the best players in the league and highlighted how dangerous he is in multiple areas of the field. Dreyer has two goals and an assist in three all-time meetings against Houston and will once again be the focal point of what San Diego does in the attack.
